Stay awake!

Homily Series: Clergy Abuse Crisis

If clerics are afraid to speak the truth they should resign.

Fr. Steve comments on the Gospel of today, with the parable of the wise and foolish virgins, and urges us, as Jesus did, to stay awake. Being “nice” is not a Christian virtue. We must speak the truth even if it may hurt people’s feelings. If not, then we will rue the day that we made bad choices.

Fr. Steve mentions Fr. James Martin who is propagating a pro-LGBT approach for the Church. But we cannot change the Church’s teachings. Some of the Church’s teachings are hard to implement: for example, the denial of sacraments to those who are divorced and remarried; the denial of same-sex marriage. If we keep quiet about the truth we may one day hear the damning words of Jesus, “Amen, amen I say to you, I do not know you.”

All of us need to stay awake and go out to meet Jesus when he comes. Who knows? He may be coming soon.
