Religious Education

We often get questions about Religious Education and Sacramental Preparation at the Church of the Resurrection and what those entail. Does Resurrection have "religious education?" Are there classes? What is offered at the school? What if we don't attend the school? How can my child prepare for their Sacraments?

At the Church of the Resurrection, we do not offer formal "Religious Education" classes, however, we do offer many wonderful options for religious formation. Some of those opportunities include the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program, the Faith & Life online series, a Youth Ministry program, Vacation Bible School, Retreats, the Troops of St. George, the Little Flowers Club, and more!

Religious Education Overview

Students at Resurrection School receive religious formation in the classroom through our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program, by attending Mass three times weekly, attending retreats, Adoration, and in many other ways in the classroom.

Parishioners with children who are homeschooled or who attend public or other schools may participate in formal religious education in the home, using the Faith & Life series online. If you have questions about religious education for your children, please contact Susan Bartold at (517) 482-4749 or [email protected] for more information.

Sacramental Preparation

At the Church of the Resurrection, children who have been baptized as infants prepare to receive their First Reconciliation in the winter of their 2nd grade year, and they prepare to receive their First Holy Communion in the spring of their 2nd grade year. Children may choose to prepare for Confirmation during their 8th, 9th or 10th grade years.

We do not have parish-sponsored classes for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, as students in our school prepare during the school day, but we do assist parish families of children in other schools (or homeschoolers) with a curriculum completed at home. We do require a weekly in-person Confirmation preparation class through the parish. If you have a child preparing for their Sacraments, please visit the following pages for more details: Baptism, First Holy Communion, First Reconciliation, Confirmation.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

We are excited to offer the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) program to both our school children and parish families.

"The 3-6-year-old child is particularly capable of receiving and enjoying the most essential elements of our faith—the announcement of God’s love especially experienced through Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who died and is risen. Materials on the life of Jesus Christ and his teachings help to make the mystery of God concrete for the child. The heart of the catechesis for children under six revolves around the Parable of the Good Shepherd. Jesus announces that he is the Good Shepherd who calls each one by name. The sheep listen to the voice of the Shepherd and follow him."

"The 3-6 year old child enters the mystery of the Eucharist by first learning the names of the articles used on the altar and then through the most important gestures including the preparation of the chalice, the epiclesis and offering, and the sign of peace. Through the experience of seeing these gestures, presented one by one, the Mass emerges as the Sacrament of the Gift. The child becomes acquainted with the historical character of the liturgy through the events of the Last Supper, Christ’s death, and His resurrection."

"The atrium (or prepared environment) is one of the important elements that helps the relationship between God and the child to flourish. After a theme has been presented, the child is free to choose an activity that will make possible the inner dialogue with the Holy Spirit." (

If your child is enrolled in Resurrection School, they will participate in the various levels of the CGS program with their class during school hours. Children in the school prepare for First Holy Communion using the CGS First Communion program.

If you are a parishioner at the Church of the Resurrection and you have a 4 or 5 year old (by the first of September) who is not enrolled in our school, we offer a Level 1 CGS session on Wednesday afternoons from 1:45-3:00pm starting in October of each school year (time is subject to change each school year). The classes follow the school calendar, so there are no classes over holidays or the summer.

There is a fee to participate, but scholarships are available. To register, please call the parish office at (517) 482-4749. For questions about CGS, please send a message to Marianne Vasievich at [email protected]

Youth Ministry

At the Church of the Resurrection, we offer Middle Schoo and High School Youth Ministry groups alongside several neighboring parishes. The purpose of Youth Ministry is to create the opportunity for the youth of Lansing to grow in their faith through fellowship, experience, and encounter. We offer a variety of social events, retreats, mission trips, adoration, and encounter opportunities to empower teens to live as disciples of Jesus and actively participate in the life of the Church.

For more information, please contact our Director of Youth Ministry, Jay Jong, at (517) 482-4749 or [email protected]
